Name: Pierre Mauguet

Title: B.I. Programmer Intern

Field of Study: M. Sc. Business Intelligence

School : HEC Montréal

Why did you choose Square Enix Montréal for your internship?

I always wanted to join a video game company but also work with data. When Square Enix Montréal offered an internship, I rushed to apply!

How would you describe your onboarding?

Not knowing what to expect about working from home in current context of COVID-19, I was a bit worried.

But this was not justified as, very quickly, I was able to contact the team and consult the documentation on Confluence to get up to date on how Square Enix Montréal works and the needs of my position.

Plus, I got all the hardware with all the software I needed to start working in good conditions!

How would you describe the team you worked with?

The B.I. Team offered great support.

They taught me how everything workin the video game industry and at Square Enix Montréal and presented the many tools used in Business Intelligence. As soon as I needed help, they were here to support me! There was also a great atmosphere!

What projects did you work on during your internship?

I created dashboards on Looker to support game teams in their tasks, especially on non-ingested data with the goal of improving data quality.

This project required that I identify the needs of different stakeholders, explore the available data, document, code the solution, document, show the solution to the stakeholders, document. Did I say document?

How do you think this internship will help you on your career path?

This was a major first step in my case. It was the first time that I worked in bot my field and in an industry that I'm passionate about. I've gained a lot of knowledge that will help me once I join the industry full time.

What will be your best memory of your internship at Square Enix Montréal?

I really loved this entire experience, but I think the best moments were during social events like the Quizzes, Jackbox Games or even the weekly Show&Tell. It helps reduce loneliness during lockdown!

Would you recommend an internship at Square Enix Montréal to other students?

Yes! It was an awesome experience! Regular follow-ups were a great help for us interns, as they guide us in projects during the week.

We never have the impression of being lost or without tasks to accomplish. We can also talk about problems during meetings and brainstorms on how to solve them.

Title: Data Analyst Intern

Field of Study: Data Science

Why did you choose Square Enix Montréal for your internship?

My main goal was to work on projects that I was passionate about and would contribute positively to.

Mobile gaming was perfect for me as this is an area that really triggered my interest. I

also noticed that Square Enix Montréal has a very positive work culture. I was happy to see events such as game jams and socials on the company website. Other than sharpening my technical skills,

I wanted to make new connections and have great experiences, and Square Enix Montréal gave me the best opportunity to accomplish my goals.

How would you describe your onboarding?

The onboarding was very smooth.

I had the chance to speak to the people I'd be working with in the first week and the setup was also pretty standard. Square Enix Montréal provided me with additional equipment that I required (e.g., a monitor and webcam) which were really helpful.

The people I interacted with were very welcoming and made me feel very comfortable from the start.

How would you describe the team you worked with?

Generally, people were very friendly and would even go out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable.

I enjoyed having discussions about things other than work with the BI team as well. As for the game team, everyone was always willing to answer my questions and resolve my doubts very effectively.

The people I worked with really cared about my personal growth and information gain during my experience and that was very special for me.

What projects did you work on during your internship?

I worked on the Space Invaders AR team and got to delve into many analyses of my own as well as designing in-game tracking and dashboard creation.

One of the big projects I worked on was the Player Journey analysis which is very important to the game designers.

I also had the opportunity to explore new areas that I felt would be beneficial to the team (e.g., exploring clustering player journeys to determine personas.)

How do you think this internship will help you on your career path?

This internship gave me a lot of product side knowledge that will help me fit into future roles much more easily.

I also gained valuable experience in data analysis and efficient methodologies, which will be key to my career as I intend on becoming a data scientist.

I also learned a lot of interpersonal skills through my communications with various people at Square Enix Montréal

What will be your best memory of your internship at Square Enix Montréal?

Playing games and coffee chats with the BI team. Also, sleeping in on Magic Mondays (the studio gave us a day off every second Monday while we work from home.) 🙂
