REWIND 2014 with Shawn Lee, Senior UI Artist

For our 10th-anniversary, we are rewinding our history through the stories of the employees who have made and lived it. One profile per year!

YOUR POSITION WHEN YOU WERE HIRED?

Junior UI artist.

In 2014, the teams were super small. It helped me learn the ropes very quickly; working with everyone while still having fun.

YOUR CURRENT POSITION?

I am a Senior UI artist. Same as before, but wiser. 😏

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE POP CULTURE MOMENT OF 2013?

J. Cole released his third studio album Forest Hill Drive which is one of my favorite albums. It was a big pop culture moment in my books.

WHAT SONG BEST REPRESENTS YOUR YEARS AT SQUARE ENIX MONTRÉAL AND WHY?

Ladders by Mac Miller. Maybe I just like the song and the message behind it.

3 WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST WEEK AT SQUARE ENIX MONTRÉAL IN 2014?

Young, exciting, party!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS WEEK.

It’s flying by!

HOW HAS THE STUDIO CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

Oh man, it changed so much!

It was such a small studio when I joined, which enabled me to work on most of the projects that were happening: Hitman Sniper, Lara Croft GO, Deus Ex Go and then also porting Hitman Go on consoles and VR.

Since then, the studio has grown a lot and the projects have transitioned to F2P games.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF YOUR YEARS AT SQUARE ENIX MONTRÉAL?

I love reminiscing about the past.

It helps us remember where we started, realize how much we have grown, and keeps us humble. If I can pick a few memories, it’d have to be the release of Lara Croft GO with very interesting party guests (i.e. reptiles), the game jam in 2017 with the SIGNS theme, and the game tournament that our team organized for the studio in 2019.

IF YOU COULD INVENT A HASHTAG FOR SQUARE ENIX MONTREAL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
