At My Desk by Max Cayhuela, Publications Coordinator

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU WORKED IN THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY?

A year and a half.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT SQUARE ENIX MONTRÉAL?

I am the release coordinator. I am responsible for deploying our games to the Apple Store and Google Play app stores.

With the collaboration of the game and customer support teams, I define the internal game publication process during which I manage the coordination of the team. My goal is to centralize information, get it to the right people, and let everyone focus on game development.

When we have validated that the new version of the game has followed all the mandatory steps, I submit it to the app stores, modifying, if necessary, the key art and parameters of the game profile.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY OF A PUBLICATIONS COORDINATOR AT SQUARE ENIX MONTRÉAL?

It all depends on the publication phase.

I spend a lot of time on the different Slack channels to check where the game teams are at for their next deployment, the status of tasks, if there are any blockers, any changes, or actions I need to take.

Taking all this into account, I update our checklist, launch releases, communicate with those involved, and send recap emails at milestones.

I reserve part of my time to improve the process or adapt it to certain specificities.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING ON YOUR DESK YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

My cat's treats to get her off my keyboard and my paintable figures of the week.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE 9?

As a child I would change my mind every 6 months, so at that age I was hesitating between stuntman and scientist.

WHAT TOP 3 SKILLS DOES IT TAKE TO BE GOOD AT YOUR JOB?

  • Be proactive and validate information: There are many people directly and indirectly involved in a publication. You must communicate with the people concerned early enough, check the progress of development to properly plan the releases of each game team, and anticipate certain requests.
  • Collaborate and ask questions: My position does not require specific technical skills, yet I regularly face technical subjects on game development or possible bugs, on tests, on data analysis tools, etc. So, I try to ask as many questions as possible and learn from my colleagues’ expertise.
  • Synthesize and document: Procedures are improved regularly. It is therefore essential to keep the documentation up to date so that it is clear and of high quality and to have truly reliable and efficient processes.

WHAT IS PEOPLE’S BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

That you can deploy a game by just clicking on a button.

There is a lot of creation, process improvement and coordination work before you get to deployment.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO IN THE MORNING BEFORE TURINING ON YOUR COMPUTER?

I read a chapter of a book or listen to a podcast. I often base myself on the recommendations of my colleagues’ Top Weekend Picks.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR COFFEE MAKING SKILLS?

My coffee maker provides a one-click solution! My Irish coffee is amazing, but it's reserved for Magic Mondays (the 2 Mondays off per month offered by the studio).

SWEATPANTS WHILE WORKING REMOTE. YAY OR NAY?

Yay! When working from home, I think it's important to feel comfortable and avoid all distractions. If dressing in sweats helps, go for it!

I try to keep up the Fancy Friday tradition I had with my manager at the studio: a colorful shirt or t-shirt.
